Most steroids are only available on prescription, but a few (such as some creams or nasal sprays) can be bought from pharmacies and shops. What are steroids used for in MS?

If you have indigestion or other stomach problems after starting steroids, then alcohol is likely to add to the problem, so you may want to cut back on how much alcohol you drink. In children and teenagers, steroids can sometimes cause growth to slow down, so they’ll need to have their height checked regularly. If growth is slowed, they might be referred to a specialist doctor for advice. Your doctor, rheumatology nurse or pharmacist should give you a steroid card if you need one.

Injections

If a woman needs to take steroid tablets whilst she is breastfeeding, prednisolone is usually recommended. Steroid injections, inhalers and sprays aren’t thought to pose a risk to babies being breastfed. However, they should be avoided or used with caution if you have an ongoing infection or a blood clotting disorder (like haemophilia). Corticosteroids can also be used to replace certain hormones that aren’t naturally produced by the body.

A person cannot bulk up enough, weigh enough, or have enough muscle to satisfy what is driving them. Anabolic steroid use gives people a fast way to bulk up and make them feel a certain way. However, the side effects of steroids can cause damage to the body. Most sports organisations have banned the use of anabolic steroids, and other performance-enhancing drugs, and will carry out regular tests on all competitors.

This can include a cough, a sore throat or a temperature above 37.5°C. You don’t have to be hitting them hard to feel the side effects of steroids. “There is a bigger cohort of men who having been using less intense anabolic steroids for shorter periods of time just to enhance appearance rather than extreme body building,” he explains.

Corticosteroids can sometimes interact with a type of medication known as protease inhibitors (like ritonavir). Your dose may need to be reduced slowly over a few weeks or months. You will need to take five tablets a day for five days in a row.
